Arrest Records in Mackinac County

The Mackinac County Sheriff's Office makes arrests on county roads and through marine, snowmobile, off-road vehicle, and island-area patrols. St. Ignace Police and Mackinac Island Police handle their city calls. Michigan State Police, Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Police, and federal agencies may also make arrests within the county. Each arresting agency keeps its own incident narrative.

The Mackinac County Jail creates a separate intake file after transport. The court later records filed charges and hearings. Michigan State Police CJIC receives fingerprints and data for felonies and serious misdemeanors that must be reported. These systems update at different times, so temporary differences are normal.

Four Mackinac Arrest Record Trails

An arrest creates no single master county file. The police report describes the incident and asserted basis for arrest. The jail record documents identity, intake, custody, bond, holds, and release. The 92nd District Court file begins with a complaint, arraignment, and bond activity. A felony later bound over adds an 11th Circuit file. CJIC connects reportable arrest and disposition data to fingerprints in the statewide history cycle.

Mackinac County Arrest Lookups

Begin with the source that answers the actual question. The jail and VINE are best for current custody. Courts show filed charges. Police agencies hold the narrative. ICHAT provides only the reportable public Michigan criminal-history layer and excludes warrants, traffic, juvenile, federal, tribal, other-state, local minor-misdemeanor, and suppressed records.

1. For present custody, call Mackinac County Jail at 906-643-7325 or search and register through MI-VINE on VINELink. Give the full name and, when known, birth date or booking date.
2. Identify the arresting agency and request its report. Contact the sheriff for county arrests, the relevant city for city arrests, or MSP for a state-police event.
3. Search the 92nd District Court in MiCOURT for arraignment and charge activity. Search 11th Circuit Court too after a felony bind-over.
4. Use the Michigan State Police Internet Criminal History Access Tool for public reportable history across Michigan. A normal name search costs $10 and is not fingerprint identification.
5. For a releasable historic sheriff booking or incident record, send a focused county FOIA request to the County Clerk as coordinator. Include the event date, place, agency, names, report number, and requested format.

Note: Intake and filing take time, so a new booking may appear through custody channels before its court docket is visible.

Mackinac County Jail Booking

The Mackinac County Jail has 28 rated beds and is certified by the Michigan Department of Corrections. It was built in 1972 and became the first jail in the nation accredited to American Correctional Association Core Jail Standards in 2009. Multiple local, state, tribal, and city agencies use the facility, which centralizes booking even when their incident reports remain decentralized.

Staff verify identity and authority to hold, inventory property, photograph and fingerprint when required, screen health and safety needs, assign a custody unit, and record charges and holds. Court action controls bail and release conditions. A booking allegation can change after prosecutor review.

Release may follow court authorization, completion of a sentence, transfer, or satisfaction of bond and other conditions. MI-VINE adds status alerts but does not set the conditions. Confirm the exact bond, accepted payment method, and release terms with the jail or court before paying. Recently arrested names can be misused in fake bond demands.

Arrest Records: What They Contain

A releasable Mackinac booking or arrest record can connect the incident, agency, custody episode, charge presented at intake, and court destination. Some operational, medical, juvenile, victim, and personal identifying fields remain private. The fields below describe likely record content, not a public online roster.

Read each field in time order. The arresting agency and intake charge describe the start of the event, while the court destination and later release data show what followed. Neither the photograph nor the bond field states how the charge ended.

Find the Mackinac Arrest Agency

The agency that created the narrative is the right first contact for it. Mackinac County does not advertise a separately named sheriff records division, so county FOIA is the written fallback for sheriff material. City arrests follow each city's request process.

Tribal and federal arrests use the relevant tribal law-enforcement or federal agency request channel. A county FOIA request cannot compel another government to release its records.

Geography matters here. The Sheriff's patrol division uses resident deputies across a county of more than 1,000 square miles, including specialized marine, snowmobile, ORV, and seasonal Bois Blanc Island work. An incident on an island or trail can still lead to booking in St. Ignace. Start with the place and type of patrol when the arresting agency is uncertain.

Recent Mackinac County Bookings

No official searchable jail roster or complete daily booking blotter was linked on the county site when researched. Neither city police department published a complete daily log, and no confirmed official sheriff or city app supplied an app-only roster. Social posts are selective and should not be treated as a full arrest history.

For a recent booking, call the jail or use MI-VINE. VINE supports custody-status searches and release notifications, but it is not the arresting agency's narrative or the final court record. MDOC OTIS is for state prisoners, parolees, and qualifying probationers, not ordinary county-jail detainees.

Request Mackinac Arrest Reports

The county FOIA procedures direct a sheriff arrest request to County Clerk, FOIA Coordinator, 100 S. Marley Street, Room 10, St. Ignace, MI 49781. It may be mailed, faxed to 906-643-7302, or emailed to macclerk@mackinaccounty.net. Put “FOIA” on the letter or fax cover or “FOIA Request” in the email subject. The form is optional if the writing describes the record well enough.

The county must respond within five business days by granting, denying, granting in part, taking one ten-business-day extension, or pointing to a free online record. Response does not always mean immediate production. Search, review, redaction, media, mailing, or copy charges may apply, and a deposit may be sought for an estimate over $50.

Ask for a defined incident rather than “all records.” A narrow request reduces search time and makes redaction issues easier to explain. Active-investigation details, victim data, juvenile information, medical or mental-health material, and private identifiers may be withheld. A denial can be appealed in writing to the County Board of Commissioners under the county procedure.

Mackinac Arrests Reach CJIC

Michigan law requires law enforcement, prosecutors, and courts to report felonies and serious misdemeanors punishable by more than 93 days to MSP CJIC. Fingerprints tie the arrest cycle to identity more firmly than a name search. The prosecutor's authorized charge and the court's final disposition may update that cycle later.

ICHAT still has defined gaps. It omits warrants and may omit a new disposition during reporting lag. It also excludes traffic, juvenile, federal, tribal, other-state, local minor-misdemeanor, suppressed, and other nonpublic records. Review the official MSP source and the local court record before treating an ICHAT name match as complete.

For self-review based on fingerprints, MSP directs applicants to its approved record-review process. That official process is distinct from the public $10 ICHAT name search. A fingerprint match is stronger evidence of identity, but even a repository record may need correction when a disposition is delayed or identifiers do not match.

Arrest Records vs Conviction Records

An arrest record proves that an agency recorded an arrest or booking. A conviction record reflects a judgment of guilt after a plea or verdict. Prosecutors may decline a charge, courts may dismiss a count, or a person may be acquitted. None of those outcomes rewrites the original incident and booking record automatically.

A dismissal does not by itself delete police and booking files. Depending on the outcome, fingerprint destruction under MCL 28.243 or relief under Michigan's conviction set-aside law may apply.

Compare the booking allegation with the prosecutor's filed charge and the disposition of each count. “Released” describes custody, not innocence or guilt. “Closed” can describe court administration. A clean reading depends on the final charge-level outcome rather than one label copied from the first record in the chain.

Note: An arrest is not proof of guilt, and the booking charge may not match the charge later filed in court.
